March 10th

As part of Voices of Detroit*, “In Choir: A Great Lakes Inquiry” will call on the power of collective voice by bringing together the Wellspring Chorale, Detroit and Flint activists, as well extending a public invitation to join in solidarity and song to declare water as a human right.

This free, community event will feature frontline water defenders testifying to their experiences surrounding water justice and what’s next. A performance by the Wellspring Chorale will open “In Choir: A Great Lakes Inquiry”, and we will close by inviting the public to join the Spontaneous Combustion Choir where we tune our voices to one another and create a beautiful, instantaneous composition.

The Spontaneous Combustion Choir (SCC) is a practice of improvisational choral singing invented by O-Lan Jones, currently a resident composer at Metabolic Studio. The SCC brings community members with a wide variety of singing experience together to create instant, cohesive, unique-to-the-group a cappella choral music. The content of each improvised song will be inspired by poems and sacred texts that have been submitted by Detroit and Flint activists.

*The Voices of Detroit exhibition at MOCAD concerns Metabolic Studio’s five-year inquiry into the world’s largest fresh water supply—the Great Lakes—and the social justice issues surrounding access to this body of water.
