Voices of Hope: Comparsa Sur & Victor Ghannam

Here's a unique Detroit-area ensemble that draws connections and builds bridges across cultures. Victor Ghannam is recognized worldwide for his combination of Middle Eastern music, jazz, flamenco, rock 'n' roll, and exotic belly dancing music, with his instruments of choice, the Middle Eastern oud (lute) and qanoun (zither). Victor is a founder of The National Arab Orchestra and has appeared on A Prairie Home Companion and with The Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He appears with Latin jazz group Comparsa Sur (Venezuela's Mariana Risquez on vocals; percussionist Alfonso Reino; bombo and accessories player Diego Ramirez, from Bordeaux, France; guitarist and charango player Pablo Trosman from Argentina; Gabriel Herrera-Duran, guitars and cuatro; and Chliean-born Ismael "Bandolero" Duran (guitar/vocal). This group has been called "an open window to and from Latin American music," and tonight they explore the Arabic influences that shaped the music of Spain and then Latin traditions in the New World. Victor Ghannam and Comparsa Sur have appeared together at Detroit's Concert of Colors and Fiesta Latina del Sol in southwest Detroit.
