The Viral Language Lab creates a context for critical conversations about subjects ranging from the trauma of gentrification to the urgent need to create safe spaces for women and girls to strategies for ensuring access to clean drinking water in light of crumbling urban infrastructure.

Using a custom mobile print cart, Maria del Carmen Montoya will lead workshop participants through the process of printing their own words creating cultural talismans for use in their daily lives. Attendants depart the session having had an opportunity to express their fears, their hopes, and strategize about ways to respond in their own communities. The resulting printed objects go out into the world with their creators— acting as reminders of that moment of being heard and as links to a spontaneous community of understanding. Copies of prints are displayed on site and shared with others who may also make prints of their own.

The project will launch at the Arab American National Museum, then travel to California and Washington, D.C.
