Job Description:

Summary:

Under the overall direction of the Senior Director of Advancement, the Communications and Social Media Manager will work seamlessly with all departments of Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum and Leslie Science & Nature Center to implement comprehensive communication efforts. This position will serve at the Leslie Science & Nature Center facility for 2 days a week, during which time onsite supervision will be provided by the Executive Director of Leslie Science and Nature Center, and at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum for 3 days a week. Weekly schedule is Sunday to Thursday. Must be available on select evenings and weekends.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with applicable departments to generate and design social media content and maintain Social Media Calendar for Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and Pinterest. Content may be related to general organization information, public or private program information, external news relating to organizational mission, and other applicable posts as directed.
  • Monitor social media platforms for interactions and respond appropriately. Work with others to ensure 7-day coverage.
  • Use various social media analytics and, with the Senior Director Advancement, adjust communications strategy according to findings.
  • Use templates and organization style guides to design and generate content for e-communications (e-blasts, eNewsletters, emails advertising special programs, promotions, and offers, etc.). Coordinate and schedule all e-communications with Constant Contact and MailChimp.
  • Maintain all email contact lists.
  • Maintain and coordinate event calendars by reaching out to applicable departments to compile necessary event information to write and update descriptions.
  • Update website content and monitor for accuracy. Design and schedule periodic website announcements.
  • Provide marketing support for all events (annual signature events, member nights, public programs, etc.), including social media, basic website updates and additions, eNewsletter support, as well as other marketing and communication duties as assigned.
  • Support our contract graphic designer(s) by providing basic design for all departments and events utilizing pre-existing templates and the guidance of organization style guides. Such design needs may include logos, signs, fliers, other print materials, and program materials to be used for marketing or program-delivery purposes.
  • Responsible for all marketing signage (digital, paper, banner) throughout the organization, including general organization information, membership, event, public programs, and special promotion signage.

Related Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain inventory of printed communications materials, monitor availability, and send materials as requested.
  • As needed, assist in on-air marketing through TV or Radio.
  • Assist in updating database with event and related marketing information.
  • As applicable, provide event/program photography and obtain photo release forms.
  • Assist in community marketing efforts, such as billboards, bus signs, outdoor flags, and media advertisements.
  • Attend staff meetings and required Organization events such as membership, fundraising, and signature events.
  • Actively participate in Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum “on duty” staff rotation and answer phones.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work collegially within a small or large group setting. Ability to work independently, as well as with others as a team, to achieve organizational goals.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, handle simultaneous projects, and prioritize projects.
  • Ability to provide a high level of customer service and interact effectively with donor audiences, external organizations, organization staff, and volunteers.
  • College degree or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent writing skills required. Must have full grasp of English grammar and syntax to ensure error-free social media posts, emails, and web copy.
  • Working knowledge in Adobe Suite. Graphic design, photography, and photo-editing experience a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of Drupal, WordPress, or Weebly website platforms.
  • Basic HTML skills
  • Working knowledge of Constant Contact, MailChimp, or other newsletter platforms.
