Job Description:

The Detroit Public Theatre produces world-class plays and programs with world-class writers, directors, actors, and designers in the heart of Midtown Detroit’s thriving cultural district. We invite Detroit audiences to experience bold plays that illuminate the thrills, joys, and challenges of our shared human experience.

DESCRIPTION

The Production Manager is responsible for overseeing all technical and production activities for Detroit Public Theatre, including four main stage productions at the Max M and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center. The Production Manager reports to the Producing Artistic Directors, works closely with an IATSE Crew Chief and crew at the DSO, and oversees technical over-hire and production interns.

Primary responsibilities of the position include:    

  • Ensure compliance with stagehands, venue, and other labor and negotiated agreements; adhere to IATSE requirements and rules.
  • Develop, maintain, and monitor production budgets, forecasts, and actuals; process check requests and invoices for relevant expenses.
  • Enforcement of standard operating procedures and safety standards
  • Run all production meetings during pre-production, rehearsals, tech, and preview performances.
  • Supervise work calls and attend technical rehearsals as needed. 
  • Assist in executing designers’ expectations and managing production budgets.
  • Track IATSE hours.
  • Create detailed production and master calendars.
  • Assist with hiring of all production staff, ensuring all required paperwork is completed and submitted to the Producing Artistic Directors.
  • Accurately record and track all production expenses.
  • Create, submit, review and advise the producers on bid packages for all departments.
  • Assist producers with tracking capital needs and improvements for production areas.
  • Obtain any fire code/guard certificates of fitness deemed appropriate and necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned by producers.

Preferred Skills:

Candidates must possess the following attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferably in theatre or business management)
  • A minimum of 2 years’ managerial experience in same or similar field is required
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to further long-term relationships with our artists and strategic partners
  • Able to manage multiple projects at once, and operate in line with proven systems
  • Positive attitude and the ability to remain effective under pressure
  • Proficient in stage management and/or elements of technical theatre
  • A high degree of emotional maturity, flexibility, and discretion; a great sense of humor and humility
  • Strong organizational skills. Excellent communication skills as well as 'team building' ability. The Production Manager is expected to remain well versed in current standards and practices.
  • Computer literacy in Windows and Mac operating systems; applications: Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign
  • Familiarity with basic functions in AutoCAD and VectorWorks. Preferably knowledge of QLab and ETC Lighting conceals.
