Job Description:

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the Director of Individual Giving is responsible for overseeing all individual annual and alumni giving, and managing activities that support the College’s fundraising campaigns.


  • Supervise and work with Associate Director of Individual Giving and Alumni Relations to develop a comprehensive individual giving plan and major gifts pipeline for the College.
  • Raise funds to support the College’s annual individual giving goals, including direct mail, phone-a-thon, and larger individual gifts of $1,000+.
  • Manage personal portfolio of 125 prospects. Develop strategies for these prospects, conduct 30 face-to-face donor visits per year, at least 20 solicitations generating a minimum of $250,000 from individual donors.
  • Collaborate with VPIA to provide input on ongoing major giving program including goals, benchmarks, budget, giving policies and all tools to track deliverables, including call sheets, moves management grid, gift pyramid, solicitation training for any staff, cultivation plans, etc.
  • Organize, support, and fundraise for current $50 Million Campaign.
  • Work with VP as liaison to Campaign Cabinet and President as it relates to the campaign.
  • Act as liaison/campaign consultant with CCS Fundraising, when needed.
  • Develop systems to manage all aspects of the Campaign as well as future campaigns, including tracking documents, campaign updates, campaign collateral materials, etc.
  • Coordinate all Campaign Committee meetings including scheduling and materials.
  • Support Campaign Chair, Committee, Trustees, President and Vice President for Institutional Advancement in identifying and soliciting major gifts.
  • Identify and research prospects with the support of Associate Director of Individual Giving, fundraising consultant and the database management team.
  • Work with VP, Campaign Counsel and Campaign Committee to develop strategies for these prospects including cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Develop all solicitation proposals for use by Campaign Committee, President and VPIA.
  • Work with Institutional Advancement colleagues to develop and implement plans to support corporate, foundation and alumni campaign strategies.
  • Work with IA team to plan and conduct campaign cultivation events.
  • Provide strategic input towards development of long-term comprehensive fund raising plans.
  • Work with administration and faculty to identify fund raising needs in collaboration with other IA team members.
  • Assist with identification, cultivation and solicitation of planned giving prospects.
  • Support fund raising for the Office of Exhibitions and Public Programs.
  • Work with Sr. Director of Annual Giving to steward individual prospects from special events.

Preferred Skills:


  • Self-starter with the ability to manage and motivate diverse internal and external teams of people who do not have a direct reporting responsibility to this position.
  • At least five years of individual giving experience; proven track record of fund raising.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with campaign management.
  • Knowledge of planned giving a plus.
  • Some travel and evening events required.
  • Commitment to CCS mission; passion for visual arts and the City of Detroit.
  • Bachelors Degree required; Master degree preferred.
