Job Description:

Job Summary: Under limited supervision, uses intermediate skills obtained through experience and training to perform professional library work and provide information in general reference, audio-visual, children's, young adult services, or classifies, catalogs, reviews and evaluates books. Provides direction to administrative support staff regarding routine day to day functions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research and respond to requests for information.
  • Catalogue acquisitions in Alma integrated library system software.
  • Process new materials received in the library including periodicals, audiovisual materials, adult and children’s books.
  • Process system reports and library usage reports.
  • Maintain Arab American National Museum (AANM) Community Resource Directory
  • Manage the annual Arab American Book Award and other library related programs within budgetary guidelines.
  • Participate in planning sessions for current and future programs and assist with the development of policies for the Library and Resource Center.
  • Represent and participate in various committees and community groups as directed.
  • Provides day to day direction pertaining to routine functions to Museum administrative support staff.
  • May direct the work of volunteers and interns as needed.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Preferred Skills:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Emerging trends in digital access (digital repositories, video/media streaming, etc.), visual literacy and fair use.
  • Fundamental concepts, principles and practices of Arab American, Ethnic and Middle Eastern history and current events.
  • Library science techniques and library services.

Skill in:

  • Operating standard office equipments and using required software applications, including Alma library services platform and Primo discovery service, DSpace digital repository and Microsoft Office.

Ability to:

  • Provide a high level of customer service.
  • Plan, initiate, and implement effective programs, projects and services.
  • Organize and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:
  • Minimum Degree Required:
  • Master’s Degree
  • Required Disciplines:
    • Library or Information Science from a graduate professional program accredited by the American Library Association or a related field


  • At least one-year experience in academic library service areas such as: reference, collection development/collection management, public services, library instruction and/or information literacy or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training approved by Human Resources.
