The internationally acclaimed Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the fourth-oldest symphony orchestra in the United States, is known for trailblazing performances, visionary maestros, and collaborations with the world’s foremost musical artists. Esteemed conductor Leonard Slatkin, called “America’s Music Director” by the Los Angeles Times, became the 12th Music Director of the DSO during the 2008-09 season. The DSO offers a year-round performance schedule that includes classical, pops, jazz, young people’s concerts and festivals. Position Summary

We seek an energetic, driven, and creative advancement colleague to provide effective stewardship to major donors. The Campaign Stewardship Coordinator collaborates with multiple units across the Advancement team to help develop and execute stewardship and donor engagement strategies and tactics aimed at increasing donor retention, communicating gift impact, recognizing donors, and deepening donor relationships. The focus of this position is to serve the team in a very collaborative and proactive nature, working with all areas of the DSO to identify activities that meet strategic priorities and take ownership of the planning, preparation, and execution of donor engagement activities as well as coordinate and support volunteer leadership and campaign committee activity.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute effective and proactive stewardship and donor engagement strategies
  • Develop and maintain systems for appropriate stewardship at all levels of campaign giving
  • Develop special stewardship projects and personalized experiences and activities to cultivate and steward donors, including ongoing and/or weekly stewardship events
  • Create and execute meetings, events, and donor gifts that help to advance strategic fundraising objectives, in close collaboration with volunteer and executive leadership
  • Assist the campaign team with establishing policies and procedures to ensure that stewardship actives are delivered on time and within budget
  • Assist the campaign team in developing annual stewardship plans linked to strategic goals
  • Schedule and coordinate volunteer leadership and campaign committee activity; prepare agendas, materials, and record minutes at committee meetings
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and establish working relationships with colleagues from all departments, DSO musicians, as well as executive and volunteer leadership
  • Support the Associate Director, Major Gifts Officer on the expansion of DSO’s planned giving program, the 1887 society
  • Serve as project coordinator for all donor recognition activities, including event planning, management, and logistics; closely track all event details in the DSO’s event management software
  • Ensure accurate donor recognition in print and online; coordinating with the Communications department appropriately
  • Regularly attend DSO concerts and events, including the Donor Lounge as part of the overall cultivation strategy
  • Provide support for signature events as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Preferred Skills:


  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Prefer a minimum 1-2 years’ experience in fundraising, marketing or sales, with an emphasis on donor management or project/event planning in a non-profit environment
  • Familiarity with Tessitura or Raiser’s Edge platforms, a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to provide donors, leadership and community partners with exceptional customer service and first-class experience
  • Project management skills with a track record of exceeding expectations while delivering ontime and on-budget results in a complex, fast paced environment
