CultureSource, with support from the Quicken Loans Community Investment Fund (QLCIF), presents Random Acts of Culture, a collaborative project that turns public spaces in downtown Detroit into creative and often unexpected showcases for our region's rich and varied cultural assets. These activations, presented by CultureSource members, represent the diverse array of cultural offerings in our region—dance, spoken word, choirs, chamber music, art exhibits, theatrical productions, and more.

Selected participants receive stipends of up to $10,000 in support of their activation, which will take place between April and May 2018. Potential activation sites throughout downtown Detroit include QLine stops, public parks, plazas, and storefronts.

With the Random Acts of Culture initiative, CultureSource strives to support cultural organizations in presenting experiences outside of traditional venues, cultivating new audiences through fun and surprising “random acts” that infuse public spaces with creative expression.

Random Acts of Culture participants will be required to collaborate with CultureSource and QLCIF to design and implement an activation that fits within the following parameters:

  • Projects can include a range of creative approaches that surprise and delight those who encounter the activation.
  • Works to promote your organization to a potentially untapped audience.
  • The activation can be new or existing. If existing, the expectation will be that this investment creates an expanded scope of work.
  • Identify one staff member who will serve as the lead contact for this project.
  • If selected, present a budget for approval to CultureSource.
